AMSTEMM new peer mentors for Fall 2011.

We are welcoming in 17 new mentors into the AMSTEMM Peer Mentoring Program for Fall 2011.

Rachael Cash attended Rockcastle County High School. She is currently a junior majoring in mining engineering with a minor in mathematics.

Drake DeHoff is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Kentucky. He is from Greenup County where he attended Russell High School. He hopes to one day attend medical school after obtaining his bachelor’s degree.

Rachel Evans attended Hazard High School. This fall she will be a junior Biology major at UK and hopes to attend medical school after graduation. She has participated in UK’s PEPP and Bio 395 undergraduate research programs. She will be a UK 101 Peer Instructor and a Fusion Site Leader this fall. She is also currently a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.

Eric Gindlesperger is from Boyd County Kentucky. He graduated from Boyd County High School where he played basketball and was president of the BETA club. He is a sophomore in Chemical Engineering.

Mason Holbrook is from Prestonsburg, Kentucky and is currently a junior at the University of Kentucky studying Biology. He is a pre-med student and also a undergraduate researcher. He likes to rock climb and just hang out.

Faith Johnson is from Pikeville, Kentucky. She is a biology major and will be a Junior here at UK. She plans to be a dentist. She is a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority and also have a twin sister! She love horses and rides in her free time!

Hope Johnson is from Pikeville, KY. She is a biology major and plans on going to optometry school. She has a twin named is Faith. She is a member of Kappa Delta. She loves animals and riding horses, having fun and meeting new people.

Derrick Lewis is a Chemistry Major here at UK. He is in the Honors Program and also a member of Beta Theta Pi, a social fraternity. He is involved with Student Wellness Ambassador and Best Buddies programs, and is an RA at Kirwan II.

Kara Lowery is from Louisville, KY. She plans to attend pharmacy school in one year. After graduation, she would like to work as a retail pharmacist. She currently works as a pharmacy technician at Kroger and as a sales associate at Abercrombie and Fitch. At UK, she is a member of the pre-pharmacy club volunteers for several organizations.

Cierra Newton is currently a freshman at the University of Kentucky, eagerly on the path to UK's College of Pharmacy to become a pediatric pharmacist. Additionally, she is eager to become fluent in spanish and studying abroad in Latin America is of great interest to her.

Khercie Smith is a junior biology major and psychology minor from Manchester, KY. She intends to practice pediatric medicine in a poverty stricken area of the United States or a developing country. At UK, she is a member of the honors program, an organic chemistry tutor, and is employed at the Kentucky Clinic Pharmacy. She enjoys volunteering with the Scott County Humane Society and the Amachi mentoring program.

Audra Stacy is an Eastern Kentucky native and graduate of East Ridge High School. She is beginning her second year at UK as a Biology major with high hopes of pursuing a medical career. She is also a part of UK's Honors Program. She enjoys reading, spending time with friends, and supporting the Wildcats in any and all sports and activities.

Roberto Tapia is a sophomore Chemistry/Psychology major/minor at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY. He is originally from Mayfield, KY and is excited to be an AMSTEMM Peer Mentor.

Danee Trowell was born in New Jersey but grew up in Louisville KY. She lived in many states as a military child but is very excited to study abroad in Madrid, Spain the summer of 2011. She is currently a Pre-med student studying Biology (major)/ Spanish (minor) at the University of Kentucky. She has a twin brother and am the 4th of 6 children.

Zeb Vance is a 2009 graduate of Bell County High School. He is a Biosystems Engineering major and plans on going to grad school. At UK he is an ambassador for the college of Agriculture and a Resident Advisor in Kirwan Tower.

Rebecca Wente graduated from East Carter County High School in Grayson, Kentucky. She is currently an agricultural biotechnology major and plans on going to medical school. Volunteering is her passion. She is currently working towards the President’s Lifetime Service Award.

Callie Williams is originally from Hazard, Kentucky. She is a junior in Chemical Engineering and an active member of Phi Sigma Rho, the women's engineering sorority.

If you are a current UK Freshmen, then we have an exciting opportunity for you! The K Week office is giving one lucky UK freshman the opportunity to address thousands of new students and their families at the New Student Induction Ceremony during K Week 2010 in August. What do you wish you had been told on your first day at UK? What advice would you give a younger sibling or friend about to start college? Share the wisdom you have gained during your first year of college with those about to do the same! This is your chance to share your unique perspective with new students and their families.

The Office of New Student and Parent Programs will select one current freshmen, who will be a sophomore next fall, to address the audience at the New Student Induction Ceremony. The student speaker will deliver a 4 – 6 minute formal speech to new students and their families. To apply, please submit your application to 518 Patterson Office Tower by Friday, March 12, 2010, at 4 p.m. For more details on the expectations, qualifications, and selection process, please review the attached application.

UK 110-001 is offered to AMSTEMM students only, as a one-credit class, which meets every other week on Wednesdays, 12-12:50. The class consists of biweekly seminars at which undergraduates in the STEM disciplines present their research to the class and the University community.

Credit hours: 1.0 credit
Grade type: Pass/Fail
Meeting Times: Every other Wednesday, 12:00-12:50p.m. (approximately 8 class meetings for the semester).
Location: 137 c/p (First class meeting 1/13/10)

The Mathematics of Fiction

Thursday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall, Manil Suri will deliver the 2009 Blazer Lecture on "The Mathematics of Fiction." The lecture is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences.

Suri, a native of India, is the author of the novels "The Death of Vishnu" and "The Age of Shiva." He is also a mathematics professor at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He performs research in numerical analysis, while spending increasing amounts of time working to bring mathematics to the general public.

Course Description:
Did you know that at a research university every faculty member is expected to be an active scholar, no matter what her or his discipline? This means there are numerous opportunities for you to participate with a faculty member as your mentor in research. Being a part of scholarly endeavors is the best reason for attending a research university as an undergraduate.
This course is designed to provide basic skills required to conduct research and other scholarly activities. Everyone in the course must be actively engaged (on average 10 hours/week) in a research or scholarly project under the mentorship of a UK faculty member. Your mentor and your major courses will teach you most of the discipline-specific knowledge that you will need for your mentored research.
The course includes discussions and readings regarding various aspects of research and scholarly inquiry methodology, such as how to frame a research question, how to find and evaluate resource materials, and how to organize your approach to a project, as well as writing research reports. You will develop or strengthen your skills with word processing, graphics input and processing, and presentations. You will keep an electronic journal, both to strengthen your writing and to reflect on the course material, and there will be practical assignments. The final project will be a publishable abstract of your mentored research.
Students who participate in mentored research enjoy many intellectually enriching and satisfying experiences. They also have higher grade point averages, and are better prepared for going on to graduate or professional education. So, get involved with research! Make a research discovery!

The Epcot Science team is looking for college students and recent graduates (within 6 months of Bachelors degree) to participate in our fun and challenging six-month internship in several different agricultural and science education fields. They are currently looking for students to fill internships for the Spring 2010 (late December 2009 - late June 2010) and the Fall 2010 terms (mid-June 2010 to early-January 2011). Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to learn what UK is doing in support of sustainability at the third annual Big Blue Goes Green: A Sustainability Showcase to be held September 14-25. The event is organized and sponsored by the UK President's Sustainability Advisory Committee and the Office of the Vice President for Facilities Management.

This year, instead of a one-day showcase in the Student Center, the event will be held over a two-week period and will include an interactive, online showcase of various campus sustainability initiatives, programs, and research as well as numerous sustainability events hosted throughout the UK campus and the city of Lexington.

AMSTEMM Students Accepted to UK Medical School

We are pleased to announce that AMSTEMM students Cameron Harding, Pike County, Julie Kretzer, Carter County, along with AMSTEMM mentors Laura Hamilton and Bailey Westerfield were accepted to UK Medical School for Fall 2009. In addition. two AMSTEMM students, Brittany N. Jones, Clay County, and Bradley Gibson, Knott County, were accepted to UK Medical School this Fall 2009, after completing the B.S./M.D. Accelerated Course of Study. The B.S./M.D. Accelerated Course of Study is a special track developed for a small number of motivated, mature high school students who intend to pursue a career in medicine. Students accepted into this program complete the first three years of the recommended undergraduate curriculum followed by the traditional four years of Medical School. Students are awarded the B.S. degree after successful completion of the first year of Medical School, and are then awarded the M.D. degree after successful completion of all Medical School requirements. Study Smarter Seminars Half-Price for AMSTEMM Students

The Study Smarter Seminar is an intensive, 4 hour, non-credit earning seminar offered in several evening sessions throughout the course of each semester. The total cost of the seminar is $40 ($20 for AMSTEMM) and includes a formal learning assessment, 4 hours of instruction, and all course materials, which students may keep and use as a resource to reference throughout the semester. Course topics include time management, note taking, study skills, critical reading, memory enhancement, exam preparation, and more. The U.S. Student Fulbright Program offers scholarships to recent bachelor’s graduates (by start of grant), master’s and doctoral students, young professionals and artists for study and research abroad. A “Full Grant” supports a project and/or study plan that will take place during one academic year in a country outside of the U.S. Fulbright Scholars meet, work, and live with and learn from the people of the host country on a daily basis. Grants are available to more than 140 countries worldwide.
The Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships Program is designed to improve foreign students' English language abilities and knowledge of the United States. English Teaching Assistants (recipients of an “ETA Grant”) are placed outside of capital cities in over 30 countries and are fully integrated into the host community, increasing their own language skills and knowledge of the host country. ETA grantees may also pursue individual study/research plans in addition to their teaching responsibilities.
Who is eligible to apply in Fall 2009 via University of Kentucky?
Enrolled students must apply via UK.
Currently enrolled seniors who will graduate before the grant period begins (Aug. 2010)
Enrolled graduate students not holding a doctoral degree at the time of application (recipients of J.D. are eligible)
Recent UK alumni are encouraged to apply through UK, but also have the option of applying as “at-large” candidates.
Applicants must be US citizens

The Welcome and Orientation Event will be Wednesday, August 26, 2009 from 6:00PM to 7:30PM in the Student Center Grand Ballroom. All new and returning AMSTEMM students are invited to attend. Our agenda for the evening includes:
• Meet your mentor for 1st and 2nd year students
• Special guest speakers
• Receive important Fall 2009 information
• Opportunity to sign up for the Undergraduate Research Program (URP)
• Giveaways/Door prizes
• Free t-shirts for all new AMSTEMM Students
Following the program we will allow some time for you to mingle while enjoying refreshments.
